Great and fun opportunity to learn one of the oldest and most traditional techniques in mosaic - the Roman Mosaic style! You will make a copy of a roman mosaic out of natural stones and marble using hammer and hardie. You'll be helped by Giulia Manzoni, an experienced mosaicist from Spilimbergo school in Italy!
The aim of the course is to bring you through a roman mosaic making experience where you will complete your own mosaic size 20cm x 20cm using natural stones, marble and hammer and hardie.
The mosaic will be made through the direct technique, the same used in ancient times. You will learn how to understand and apply the original roman andamento and other fundamental mosaic skills, learning how to break and shape marble stones, lay and grout this material into your chosen design. The emphasis will be on the making but there will also be an opportunity to gain some knowledge of the history of Roman mosaics. All equipment and materials are supplied.
A variety of designs are provided, all taken from original Roman mosaic.
Course content :
Briefly explenation about what mosaic is, its history and development through the ages;
Study of dividing the image into a roman mosaic layout (Andamenti) and prepare the working surface, to which stones (tesserae) will be applied;
How to utilize the hammer and hardie for mosaics, how to lay mosaic stones using tweezers and adhesive cement onto a wood support;
Producing a mosaic piece from a sketch using a direct technique;
Grouting , cleaning and finishing your mosaic.
