10 Week Master Class 2017: Portraits in Mosaics (Thursday evening)

10 Week Master Class 2017: Portraits in Mosaics (Thursday evening)

10 Week Master Class: Portraits in Mosaics

Date: Thursday 27th April 2017 for 10 weeks
Times: 18:30-20:30

Creating portraits in mosaic is a great way to pay homage to a person of historical importance, an important family member or to celebrate a person in our local community.
Portraiture is a repeating genre in Greek, Byzantine and Roman mosaic including portraits
of Emperors, depictions of gods and goddesses, and later on Christian themes. The
durability and strength of mosaic created a long-lasting art-form viable for the
representation of power, belief and aesthetics.

Learning aims

Students will learn how to analytically construct a portrait with mosaic tiles. This will
enhance their ability to make quick and refined artistic decisions with a sense of line,
composition and texture. The course delivers technical, conceptual and analytical skills to enhance your visual decision making.

Course content

At the first session participants will be briefed about the steps involved in creating a
mosaic portrait. At this point it is necessary to familiarise with methods and materials to
insure an understanding of quality, durability and an eye for detail (we will look at
examples of previous work).

Students will prepare their working surface, to which tiles will be applied. Before tiles are laid students will develop a colour scheme for their work. At the same time we will look at simplifying shapes, contrasts and lines to form a an andamento structure.

While laying tiles students will focus on how to cut tiles for detailed areas of the face such
as eyes, mouth and hair. We will look at how to capture the characteristic features of a
person, which involves understanding the basic anatomy of a face, its features and how
we interpret emotion and gesture.

When students completed their design, they will grout the mosaic. The final mosaic has to
be cleaned and where necessary retouched.

What students should be able to do at the end of the course:

  1. To understand the techniques and materials of traditional mosaic: andamento, indirect method, grout, glass and ceramic tiles,
  2. To select and observe the image source for the mosaic, analysing ways of perception and expression,
  3. To transfer an image onto another surface and develop a colour scheme,
  4. To understand the internal structure and composition of a portrait

After booking a place in this course, all partipants must submit their design idea in advance to info@southbankmosaics.com

Week by week outline

Week 1

  • Introduction to our studio, materials and the course structure
  • Preparing your working surface: discussing how we can actualize your image in mosaic
  • transfering your image to the A4 wooden working surface with overhead projector
  • defining a colour scheme and select tiles accordingly

Week 2

  • Introduction to materials and method: Cutting tiles, abstraction, andamento, creating a border.
  • Laying tiles starting with central features and lines, working from inside the face to outside areas

Week 3 – 9

  • Laying tiles

Week 10

  • Grouting and cleaning. The work has to rest for a few days before the last cleaning can be done.
(This is a flexible schedule, acknowledging that all of us work at different pace. Don’t worry if the work isn’t coming along as quickly as in this outline. You can use our studio at your own time after the tutored teaching time).
