Hopton Street
At this stop we have installed a large mural.
Surrounded by office blocks and a stone’s throw from Tate Modern, the alms houses of Hopton Street have a garden with a magnificent fig tree. We used the fig tree as the basis for a Tree of Life. Volunteers asked the tenants of the houses what occupations they had been engaged in before retiring, and then depicted their pasts within the branches of the tree. In the background of the mural is St. Paul’s cathedral and the shadow of Tate Modern falls across the river. Unfortunately, the gardens are not open to the public. You may be able to gain access by asking one of the residents to let you in to see the mosaic Tree of Life by the fig tree. Or you can peep over the wall where the fig tree grows. In winter, when the leaves of the tree have fallen, if you walk on the opposite side of Hopton Street and stand on your tip toes, you should be able to see the mosaic. If you do go into the garden of Hopton Homes, please respect the space and keep quiet. Thank you.
